The game runs quite well too, although it can be fairly demanding at times. The game also ties into Surgeon Simulator, featuring some callbacks that’ll be fun for people who played the second title. There’s also a lot of variety to its locales, from the aforementioned cityscapes to quiet, green marshes, and even a hospital. This game is gorgeous, often evoking the feeling of a high-budget CGI movie. Once you roll it out of the home, however, you’re greeted with a bustling, colorful city packed with people and awash with personality. The bowl will break if it falls from most heights. I Am Fish‘s first level begins with the goldfish in a perfectly round, sealed fish bowl that it can roll around in freely.

The game even allows you to skip to the next checkpoint if you get stuck, so this is a more lenient experience, especially when compared to the torture of playing Surgeon Simulator 2. It can easily take seven or eight hours to play them all, depending on your skill level.

Sure, there are only 14 levels, but I don’t think this is too short of an experience. There’s also a bonus level if you meet the requirements. The game’s structure is simple: beat each of the fish’s three levels and you’ll unlock the finale. Initially, you play as the goldfish for the first three levels before unlocking more for the other three. It’s a cute setup and the fish themselves are all adorable. But, missing their friends, they all decide to escape and meet back up in the ocean. Shortly after, the four are sold to new owners. They’re totally normal fish at first, but then the store owner inadvertently gives them some of the magic bread from I Am Bread and they become hyperintelligent. I Am Fish starts out with four fish living in a tank at a pet store. Between its wonderful visuals, fantastic art direction, tight controls, clever premise, and strong level design, it’s hard not to get swept up in its current. I Am Fish can be rage-inducing and questionably designed in spots, but it’s honestly a strong release. Would it be another trollish title, or is it a game that people could actually, y’know, enjoy? The answer is somewhere in between these two extremes. With I Am Fish, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I don’t always like them, mind you, but I appreciate them. Whilst I Am Fish may look like a piece of hake to play, actshoally the controls are deliberately designed to be challenging and with an additional layer of added Bossa Style controls, it won’t be like shooting fish in a barrel.I generally appreciate games made by Bossa Studios.

Cheers! Navigating in each make-shift aquatic vehicle poses its own unique challenge, but don’t worry, the relative freedom of open water is never too far away with inviting fountains, swimming pools and err, sewers full of hazardous materials to splash around in, before reaching the final goal – the shimmering, open ocean. Our four fin-tastic friends will be hitching rides in all manner of ad hoc water carriers including jars, mop buckets on wheels and the occasional pint glass. We won’t dwell on grizzly fish death, but should your fish fall too far in whatever make-shift fishbowl it finds itself in, run out of air or generally flounder you will be popped back to the most recent checkpoint to refine your approach. With its idyllic coastline and quaint villages Barnardshire might seem like a perfect slice of quintessential tranquility, but to our aquatic adventurers it’s alive with the very real threats presented by crossing roads, traversing rooftops, dodging deep fat fryers, avoiding wildlife including the cantankerous locals, not to mention fragile fishbowls and the very real problem that fish can’t breathe out of water. A simple, intuitive control scheme leaves no excuses should your fish perish leaving you feeling very gill-ty. Swim, roll, glide, chomp, flip flop, inflate, fly and bite your way through enthralling challenges. Flying Fish – a little aloof at times but a real softy at heart, with the ability to glide through the air! These plucky heroes will leave no bowl unturned, putting their heart and shoal into the mission to re-unite! Piranha - wild, chaotic, loud, unpredictable, and loves to bite - obviously. Meet our heroes! Goldfish - cheerful, brave, and adventurous, a natural born swimmer! Pufferfish – a little slow but kind-hearted who can also puff up into a ball and roll across land. Over the course of the game you join them as they swim, fly, roll and chomp their way to the open ocean from the far-flung corners of Barnardshire (the smallest county in England) in their bid for freedom and to re-unite once again. I Am Fish is a charming, physics-based adventure starring four intrepid fish friends, forcibly separated from their home in a pet shop fish tank.
